Whilst Costa Rica has two main seasons, a dry and rainy, you are very unlikely not to experience some rain at any time of year – it is no surprise that much of the country is covered by rainforest! However, the rain normally comes in short, sharp bursts and plenty of sunshine can be expected especially from December to May. The temperature in Costa Rica remains constant throughout the year, typically hovering between 20 and 30°C, with the temperatures in the mountainous interior a little cooler than the coast. The climate is generally wetter the further south you travel – parts of the north-west of Costa Rica are covered by tropical dry forests, while the Osa Peninsular in the south-west is the wettest part of the country covered with dense rainforest. The weather is a little more unpredictable on the Caribbean Coast, which generally experiences more rain than the rest of the country throughout the year, although in September and October it can be drier than the rest of the Costa Rica. January – April

The months of January, February, March and April mark Costa Rica’s dry season and are widely considered the best time to visit. During this period, you can expect plenty of sunshine with only occasional short-lived showers, mainly in the late afternoon. Average daytime temperatures typically range from around 27°C to 32°C, with coastal areas feeling warmer and the central highlands slightly cooler. It’s an excellent time for spotting wildlife in national parks, as animals gather near water sources, and also great for relaxing on the beaches under clear skies. However, this is also peak travel season—especially around New Year and Easter—so booking accommodation and tours well in advance is strongly recommended.

May - August

From May through August, Costa Rica transitions into its green season, when rainfall gradually increases but is often balanced by plenty of sunshine, particularly in the mornings. Average temperatures remain warm, typically ranging from 26°C to 31°C , with humidity rising as the season progresses. May and June are generally quieter months before the international school holidays begin in July, making them a good time to travel for fewer crowds and better value. The Osa Peninsula in the south becomes especially wet during this period, and some lodges close temporarily. Meanwhile, from mid-June onwards, Tortuguero sees large numbers of nesting turtles arrive on its beaches, offering a unique wildlife experience.

September - October

September and October are the wettest months to visit Costa Rica, with heavy rainfall occurring on most days, often in prolonged afternoon downpours. Temperatures remain warm despite the rain, typically averaging between 25°C and 29°C, though high humidity can make it feel hotter. Travel during this time can be more challenging, particularly in rural areas where travel may be disrupted. Wildlife can also be harder to spot in national parks as animals seek shelter. Tropical storms from the Caribbean sometimes bring several days of intense rain, which can temporarily halt travel plans. However, this is the low season, meaning fewer crowds and lower prices, and in Tortuguero, turtle nesting activity continues through to the end of October.

November – December

November and December mark the transition out of the rainy season in Costa Rica, as conditions gradually become drier and more settled. Average temperatures typically range from around 26°C to 30°C, with a mix of sunshine and lingering showers, particularly in early November. In some years, rainfall can continue into December, though it usually eases in the lead-up to Christmas. As the weather improves, travellers begin to return and landscapes remain lush and green after the rains. The festive period is especially popular, particularly with visitors from the United States, and demand for accommodation rises sharply. As a result, travel over Christmas and New Year should be booked well in advance to secure the best options.
