Costa Rica is one of Central America's most captivating destinations, and despite its relatively small size, it is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity, stunning landscapes and commitment to environmental conservation. Visitors are drawn by the country's relaxed lifestyle, often summed up by the phrase pura vida which translates to ‘pure life’ and reflects the friendly nature of its people and their appreciation of nature. Costa Rica is also considered one of the world's leading ecotourism destinations, offering countless opportunities for adventure, wildlife observation and sustainable travel.

The country's interior is dominated by lush rainforests, fertile valleys and dramatic volcanic scenery. Arenal is a must-see destination on any itinerary, where you can encounter the iconic cone-shaped volcano surrounded by tropical forest and natural hot springs, and where you can try many activities such as hiking, kayaking and wildlife spotting. Further west lies Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve, famous for its mist-covered forests and remarkable biodiversity. Visitors can explore hanging bridges suspended high above the forest floor, walk through unique cloud forest habitats and search for colourful birds, including the resplendent quetzal. Other highlights inland include San Gerardo de Dota which is known for its excellent birdwatching, the coffee plantations surrounding Turrialba, Bajos del Toro which boasts spectacular scenery and tumbling waterfalls and the excellent hiking trails of the Orosi Valley.

Costa Rica's Pacific Coast features long stretches of golden sand, excellent surfing conditions and numerous national parks. Popular destinations include the beaches of Manuel Antonio National Park, where rainforest meets the ocean and wildlife such as monkeys and sloths can easily be seen. Further north, the Guanacaste region offers a drier climate and a range of beautiful beach resorts, where to the south lies the stunning and more remote Osa Peninsula which boasts pristine rainforest, exceptional wildlife viewing, especially in the Corcovado National Park. The Caribbean side is a fascinating contrast to the Pacific Coast, home to a laidback Afro-Caribbean culture, the waterways and wetlands of Tortuguero National Park which is famous for its sea turtle nesting sites and wild beaches and wildlife-rich forests such as Cahuita and Manzanillo.

Whether you are looking for incredible wildlife, relaxing beaches, exhilarating activities, immersing yourself in the local culture or a combination of all of these, our travel experts can design the perfect trip for you. Costa Rica is a small country and travel times are rarely long, giving you more time to explore or relax. We can organise transfers between the different locations in private vehicles with your own driver, or you can join shared transfers that collect you from your hotel and shuttle between the different parts of the country. Self-driving is also a popular option to explore the country – outside of San Jose the traffic is generally light and most of the roads are in good condition. Light aircraft also link the more remote areas of the country such as Tortuguero National Park and the Osa Peninsular with the capital.

Activities are typically arranged through the lodges and national parks, joining small groups to explore the region with a local guide from your accommodation or reserve, although private guided tours can be arranged in some regions. You can explore the wildlife of the dense rainforest on foot or by boat or look out for birdlife walking the cloud forest trails. Costa Rica is famous for its range of more adventurous activities and there is also excellent snorkelling and diving, or for a more relaxed experience you can visit some of Costa Rica’s many plantations to learn about the production of coffee, chocolate and other tropical exports.

Beaches of Costa Rica

Costa Rica is blessed with fabulous beaches on both the Pacific and Caribbean coast and we highly recommend incorporating at least one beach resort during a holiday. The Northern Pacific Coast generally has the best beaches, from the volcanic black sand beaches of the isolated Papagoyo Peninsula to sheltered waters of Playa Hermosa or the laidback surf-town of Tamarindo with its white sandy bay. Further south lies Manuel Antonio where the rainforest meets the coast, a destination that should never be overlooked. Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula boasts an isolated, wild beach providing access to incredible diving at Cano Island or Playa Uvita is unique in being known for its ‘whale tail’ sandbar. The beaches of the Caribbean Coast offer a very different Afro-Caribbean atmosphere, and whilst the waters here are sometimes too rough for swimming from the beach, the coast is fringed by beautiful rainforest with excellent reefs for snorkelling from a boat.

Wildlife in Costa Rica

Home to over 500,000 species – which represents nearly 5% of the species estimated worldwide - Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse countries globally. Sloths are probably the most iconic of Costa Rica’s species, with both two and three toed species present. Four monkey species inhabit different regions, while elusive animals like jaguars, pumas, coatis, tapirs and ocelots roam rainforests such as Corcovado and Tortuguero. The forests also host vibrant insects and reptiles, including the red-eyed tree frog and striking blue morpho butterfly. Birdlife is especially abundant with nearly 1000 species. Bird lovers can enjoy searching for the colourful resplendent quetzal, hummingbird, rainbow-billed toucan and scarlet macaw. Offshore, Ballena National Park and the Golfo Dulce are prime locations for humpback whales and dolphins, while sea turtles nest along both coasts. Coral reefs on the Caribbean and Pacific coasts also provide excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving.
