Holidays to Vietnam

Stretching from the rugged mountainous regions of the north, the peaks of which line the Chinese border, to the languorous landscapes of the sultry Mekong Delta, Vietnam is a nation of great diversity and cultural interest.

The long sweeping coastline of the South China Sea and internal frontiers shared with neighbours Laos and Cambodia have resulted in a nation blessed with a variety of different landscapes, climates and cultures which, in turn, have influenced its people, food and history. The result is that holidays to Vietnam offer plenty, can appeal to a range of different interests and can take place the year round. From the craggy peaks of the north and the natural beauty of Ha Long Bay, to Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta in the south, there is so much to see.

In the north, Vietnam holiday destinations include Hanoi, an elegant old French colonial city of tree-lined boulevards and crumbling buildings as well as the colourful minority villages around Sapa. In central Vietnam, holidays centre on the old imperial city of Hue and delightful Hoi An with its cobbled streets and colourful markets. To the south lies Ho Chi Minh City and at the tip of the country is the verdant Mekong Delta – a land of houseboats, floating markets and the starting point for cruises on the mighty Mekong River. Vietnam is also home to some of the region’s finest beaches with two tropical islands, Phu Quoc and Con Dao, offering the ultimate retreat. As a Vietnam specialist, our knowledge and experience allow us to create unique Vietnam tours that are tailored exactly to your requirements.

Places to visit in Vietnam

Much like the country’s varying climates, Vietnam’s three regions offer very distinct experiences. In the north travel by local train into the heart of Sapa to visit the neighbouring hill tribe villages, sail Halong Bay by junk boat passing thousands of limestone islets and marvel at Hanoi’s historical sites and charming French colonial architecture. In central Vietnam visit Hue’s ancient citadel, amble along Hoi An’s lantern-lined cobbled streets, see the little-visited caves at Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park or explore Vietnam War era forts and battlefields as well as sections of the Ho Chi Minh trail.

In the south of Vietnam take your pick from a variety of beach retreats such as Nha Trang or tropical islands, sample some of Asia’s best street food in Ho Chi Minh City and traverse the watery landscapes of the Mekong Delta, the ‘rice bowl’ of Vietnam.

Best beaches in Vietnam

With a number of palm-fringed islands and a long coastline that stretches from the Chinese border to the Gulf of Thailand, Vietnam has a host of excellent beaches and coastal resorts each with their own character and style. Consequently, the best beach holiday destination in Vietnam depends on the type of beach that you are looking for and also the time of year you plan to visit since weather conditions can vary considerably across the country. The main beach areas are found between central and southern Vietnam – in the central region most resorts line China Beach, a long stretch of coastline between the towns of Danang and Hoi An whilst, further south, the golden sand beaches of Nha Trang, Mui Ne and Phan Thiet offer beautiful surroundings, palm-fringed coastlines and a range of different accommodation options. For the ultimate beach escape, the Con Dao Islands or Phu Quoc, both sited off the southern coast of Vietnam, provide turquoise seas, pristine beaches and have regular air links with the mainland.

Where to go in Vietnam

From bustling cities and remote hill villages to jungle-clad rivers and sandy beaches, there are a whole host of different places to visit in Vietnam. Northern Vietnam is home to both the nation’s capital Hanoi and arguably its most recognisable location, Ha Long Bay. Hanoi, with its tree-lined streets, 19th century buildings and spacious parks is set between the terraced hills of Sapa and the dramatic coastal scenery of Ha Long. Further south, the cultural and historic sites of central Vietnam such as the former imperial city of Hue and picturesque riverside town of Hoi An have retained much of their charm and provide a stopping off point for the luxurious resorts that line China Beach. The southern tip of Vietnam is dominated by Ho Chi Minh City and the riverine landscapes of the Mekong Delta. Bustling and cosmopolitan, lively Ho Chi Minh is the face of modern Vietnam. It is also a base from which to visit the idyllic islands of Con Dao and Phu Quoc, the pretty towns of the delta or neighbouring Cambodia.

Tet, which is the Vietnamese New Year, is a lunar festival and therefore does not have fixed dates although tends to fall between the end of January and the beginning of February. Similar to Christmas, Tet is a family celebration and during the festivities many businesses including restaurants, shops and markets are closed. Conversely, domestic airports and railway stations become increasingly busy with people travelling to different parts of the country to spend Tet with their family. For visitors, travel during Tet can be more of a challenge and we will be happy to advise you of the impact on your holiday during this period.

Light loose-fitting clothing is ideal for Vietnam however bringing something warm for the evenings, especially in northern Vietnam, is recommended as temperatures can drop.
