When is the best time to visit Vietnam?
Vietnam has no specific off season, due mostly to the unique geography of the country, and therefore it can be visited year-round. Generally, the best time to travel to Vietnam is between November and early May with the rainy season typically occurring from late May to early October. Warm temperatures and humidity should be expected throughout the country with the exception of the mountainous regions of the north which are noticeably cooler.
Do you need a visa to travel to Vietnam?
Vietnam has reintroduced visa waivers for UK nationals. This visa waiver allows visitors to enter Vietnam for up to 45 days without the need to apply for a visa. For holidays longer than 45 days, you can apply for an e-visa that allows a 90-day stay and multiple entries.
How long is the flight to Vietnam from the UK?
Both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh are connected to the UK with direct international flights to London Heathrow. Direct flights take approximately 12 hours whilst flights that stop en-route typically take around 16 hours depending on the location of the connecting airport.
Are vaccinations required for travel to Vietnam?
We would advise you to speak to a medical professional regarding information on any vaccinations and health requirements for Vietnam. Currently recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus and Diphtheria. Anti-malarial tablets may also need be considered, although the risk of malaria in coastal locations is considered to be low.
What currency is used in Vietnam?
The currency in use throughout Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong. US Dollars are also widely accepted throughout the country but particularly in tourist areas. Mastercard and Visa are accepted in larger establishments and ATMs are available in the majority of larger towns and cities.
Will travelling during the Tet Festival affect my holiday?
Tet, which is the Vietnamese New Year, is a lunar festival and therefore does not have fixed dates although tends to fall between the end of January and the beginning of February. Similar to Christmas, Tet is a family celebration and during the festivities many businesses including restaurants, shops and markets are closed. Conversely, domestic airports and railway stations become increasingly busy with people travelling to different parts of the country to spend Tet with their family. For visitors, travel during Tet can be more of a challenge and we will be happy to advise you of the impact on your holiday during this period.
What do I need to pack for my holiday to Vietnam?
Light loose-fitting clothing is ideal for Vietnam however bringing something warm for the evenings, especially in northern Vietnam, is recommended as temperatures can drop. For sightseeing, comfortable shoes are a must and if they can be slipped on and off easily it is a bonus since they will need to be removed when entering temples. On the whole casual dress is acceptable throughout Vietnam however you will need to dress modestly with knees and tops of shoulders covered, particularly at religious sites.
Is travelling to Vietnam safe?
Yes, it is perfectly safe to visit Vietnam! There is no UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advice against travel to Vietnam, however, we would always recommend keeping up to date with the FCDO’s informative Vietnam travel advice webpage.
