Located at the eastern extremity of the Mediterranean, Jordan, and the lands that came before it, have always been a staging post between Europe, Asia and the Middle East. When one thinks of Jordan they think of Petra – one of the ancient world’s wealthiest trading cities and today a place that has lost little of its grandeur and magnificence. Laboriously chiselled from the rich red rocks of the Jordanian interior, squeezed almost unimaginably between a series of narrow rock fissures and cracks, Petra truly does need to be seen to be believed and no journey to the country is complete without a visit to one of antiquity’s most important cities.

Aside from Petra, Jordan is also the home of Jerash, considered one of the region’s best preserved Roman sites, the Byzantine church of Mt Nebo, an exquisite 16th century mosaic map in the town of Madaba and the grand 12th century crusader castle of Kerak – all of which are usually incorporated in our Jordan holidays.

Additionally, Jordan is also blessed with a wealth of impressive natural wonders with two of the best known being the Dead Sea – the earth’s lowest point – and the desert landscapes of Wadi Rum made famous by Lawrence of Araba. Further to the south, the country also has a small coastline that abuts the Red Sea and, close to the town of Aqaba, the excellent coral reefs are some of the best preserved in the region. Places to visit in Jordan

Located at one of civilisation’s most important crossroads, modern-day Jordan has been blessed with the remnants of these bygone societies. The best known of these is Petra, the extraordinary Nabataean settlement carved into the red-rock canyons of southern Jordan. This ancient city has been beautifully preserved by the desert climate and the approach breathtaking.

However, there are number of equally important historic places dotted throughout the country. These include the Roman remains of Jerash, the Saladin-era castle at Ajloun, the crusader fortress at Kerak and the Christian sites of the Jordan Valley and Mt Nebo and Madaba. For those interested in landscapes relax by the Dead Sea, follow in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia at Wadi Rum or hike the wadis of the Dana Nature Reserve. The Red Sea town of Aqaba has comfortable resort hotels and excellent snorkelling.

A land of great antiquity, the area that today forms the modern nation of Jordan has, over millennia, played host to the great civilisations of history. Each has left its indelible mark and Jordan is now a custodian to some of the region’s most important historic sites. For many the city of Petra is synonymous with Jordan. Dating back 2000 years this Nabatean capital has retained its monumental splendour and is rightly considered a wonder of the ancient world. By 100AD an increasingly confident Roman state had absorbed much of the region into their empire and, subsequently, there are many classical sites of interest including the city of Jerash, the Roman Theatre and Temple of Hercules in Amman and the little-visited ruins of Umm Qais. Jordan is also home to a number of significant Christian sites including Bethany Beyond the Jordan where Jesus was baptised, St George’s Church in Madaba which houses one of the finest Byzantine mosaics in the Middle East and Mount Nebo with its association with Moses.

With its atmospheric arid deserts, lush wadis, inland seas, rocky heights and ethereal geological formations, Jordan is a country blessed with striking landscapes. The lowest land-based feature on earth the Dead Sea – actually a vast landlocked salt lake – forms part of the Great Rift Valley with its buoyant waters accessible from a number of spa resorts. Further south lies the protected desert of Wadi Rum. The dramatic rock formations, sand dunes, coloured cliffs and varied wildlife are at their visual finest at sunrise and sunset and there is a selection of tented accommodation to allow you to best experience this majestic landscape. Lesser known but equally impressive are the wadis and rugged mountains of the Dana Biosphere Reserve which offer some excellent, if occasionally challenging, walking trails and good birdwatching opportunities. Jordan also shares a small stretch of Red Sea coastline. Centred on the town of Aqaba, the crystal-clear coastal waters harbour colourful coral reefs and excellent diving.

The weather in Jordan is predominately hot, dry and almost always sunny between April and November with the highest temperatures experienced during the months of June, July and August. Spring and Autumn are temperate with warm days and cool evenings. The winter months herald the arrival irregular showers and, at night, it has been known for temperatures to fall below freezing.
