Almost from the outset there has been a strong link with Islam – Fes is centred on the Qaraouiyine mosque – and even today this fascinating and colourful city is still considered the spiritual capital of the country. The old city is a delight – a medieval labyrinth of historic buildings, ancient tanneries and an intricate network of narrow lanes and souks impassable to all but the donkey.
