The Opera Experience Index
Opera remains one of the most culturally significant art forms today, combining world-class performances with globally renowned and historically rich opera venues.
With an abundance of European opera festivals and exceptional productions on offer, audiences are truly spoiled for choice. But which cities offer the very best luxury opera experiences?
We have curated an Opera Experience Index, ranking the ten leading cities for an unforgettable opera experience.
Each city was rated out of 10 based on the following factors:
Total number of opera performances in 2026
Total number of opera venues
Average Google rating of venues
Total number of Michelin restaurants and hotels per capita
The results crown the German capital as the best luxury opera destination, followed by Paris in second and London completing the top three. In total, seven capital cities and nine European locations feature in the top ten.

1 Berlin – 10/10
Our index places Berlin as the best city in the world for opera. While this may come as a surprise compared with more traditional opera capitals such as Verona or Milan, our data reflects the German capital’s exceptional operatic offering.
The city hosts the highest number of opera performances in 2026 (98), alongside one of the largest amounts of opera venues (surpassed only by London), giving visitors no shortage of options when exploring Berlin’s rich musical scene.
There are seven opera venues in Berlin, including three major opera houses: Deutsche Oper, Komische Oper and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Across these venues, the average Google rating is 4.7 out of 5 stars. Its highest-rated venue, the lavish Berliner Philharmonie, is widely celebrated as one of the world’s leading concert halls, with a Google rating of 4.8 stars.
